Personalised Self Help Programs
Self Help Programs. Meta: 5 min read · Flexible · Short term.
A roadmap you can actually follow, not just a diagnosis.
Not everyone can commit to ongoing weekly therapy right now, and that's okay. We design personalised self help programs so you leave with clarity, tools, and a clear sense of what to do next.
Therapy isn't all or nothing. Sometimes you don't need a long course of sessions, you need someone to help you understand what's going on and hand you a map you can walk on your own.
What a self help program is. A The Psych Plus self help program is a short, focused piece of work, often just a few sessions, designed to give you a structured, personalised plan you can carry forward independently. We bring the clinical understanding; you leave with practical, evidence based strategies tailored to your situation, your goals and your pace. It's sometimes called guided self help, and it sits at the lighter touch end of what's known as stepped care, matching the intensity of support to what you actually need. It might suit you if you can't commit to ongoing therapy right now, you're fairly self directed and want tools to run with, your difficulties are mild to moderate, or you want a clear plan before deciding whether to start longer term therapy.
How it works. Understand (a focused session to understand what's going on, what you've already tried, and what you want to be different) · Design your roadmap (we build a personalised plan, the specific strategies, resources and steps that fit you, drawn from evidence based approaches like CBT and ACT) · Equip and hand over (you leave with practical tools and a clear roadmap you can follow at your own pace) · Optional check in (if you'd like, we can schedule a check in down the track to adjust the plan or step up to ongoing therapy if you need it).
Does self help actually work? Yes, for the right person, at the right level. Decades of research show that guided self help, particularly when grounded in CBT and supported by a clinician, can produce meaningful improvements in mild to moderate anxiety and depression. The guided part matters: having a psychologist shape the plan and point you to the right tools makes a real difference compared with going it entirely alone. Stepped care is a widely adopted model. Clinician guided self help consistently outperforms self help with no support. For many with mild to moderate symptoms, guided self help can approach the benefit of face to face therapy.
An honest word. Self help isn't right for everyone or every problem. If your difficulties are more complex or distressing, we'll say so, and recommend the level of care that genuinely fits. Your wellbeing comes before any single format.
