Diagnostic and Psychological Assessments

Diagnostic Assessments. 6 min read · ADHD and autism

A psychological assessment, without the mystery.

Whether you're exploring ADHD, autism, or simply want to understand yourself more clearly, an assessment can be a turning point. Here's what's involved, what you'll walk away with, and how it leads somewhere useful.

An assessment isn't a label hunt. At its best, it's a careful, compassionate process of understanding, answering the question why has this always been harder for me, and turning that understanding into a plan.

Why people seek an assessment.
Things that come easily to others have always taken more effort, and you want to know why:
· you suspect ADHD, autism, or another presentation, and want clarity from a qualified clinician
· you need documentation for support at work, university or school, or for funding such as NDIS
· a diagnosis would help you access the right treatment, accommodations, or self understanding
· you simply want a clear picture of your strengths and challenges to guide what comes next.

A note on language. We approach neurodivergence, including ADHD and autism, as difference, not deficit. An assessment names how your mind works so the world can fit you better. It is never about deciding there's something wrong with you.

What's involved. A comprehensive assessment is more than a single questionnaire. It usually unfolds over a few appointments:
Clarifying the question (we start by understanding what you're hoping the assessment will answer)
· Clinical interview and history (a detailed conversation about your development, history, daily life and current experiences) · Standardised measures (validated questionnaires and rating scales, sometimes with input from someone who knows you well)
· Feedback and report (we talk through the findings in plain language, followed by a clear, written report).

What you receive. A clear summary of findings, written in language you can actually understand · your profile of strengths as well as challenges, both matter · practical, tailored recommendations for support, accommodations and next steps · a treatment pathway, so the assessment opens a door rather than closing a file.

Assessments are quoted individually. Because every assessment is scoped to your specific question, fees are quoted on enquiry. Some Medicare or NDIS items may apply depending on your situation, we'll talk you through it before you commit to anything.

Adults are welcome here. Many people reach adulthood having been missed, particularly women, and those from culturally diverse backgrounds, whose presentations were overlooked or misread. It is never too late to understand yourself. A late assessment can be one of the most validating experiences of a person's life.
